The Sheaf, in the Hop Exchange vaults on Southwark Street, told this pub's story as its own: it rose, it said, from the ashes of the now-closed Wheatsheaf site in Borough Market, and hung photographs of the old regulars on its walls. Different building, different street. Heir to the crowd, not to the deeds.
