Keats at the Globe — the former Moorgate — November 2008
The Story
The Moorgate stood at 85 Moorgate, on the site of the Swan and Hoop, the inn where John Keats is said to have been born in 1795 — his father worked its stables, though whether Keats was born in the inn itself or in the family's house nearby is not certain. By the 1830s it had become the Moorgate Coffee House, and for long years afterwards it traded simply as the Moorgate; Richards and Curl list it under that name in their 1973 City of London Pubs. It always lived flank to flank with the bigger, noisier Globe next door. In 1990 the two were put under a single licence, a connecting door was knocked through, and the Moorgate lost its own street number. By 1999 it had been renamed the John Keats at Moorgate, with lines of his poetry painted on the walls and no music — conversation instead. It trades today as Keats at the Globe.
