The Holborn Whippet in its prime — Sicilian Avenue, with the bratwurst-and-fries room at the corner.
The Story
From the group behind Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes and The Euston Tap. Traded for over a decade on Grade II-listed Sicilian Avenue — two ground-floor bars, a basement pizza-and-games room, rotating small-brewery cask (Bristol Beer Factory, Oakham, Dark Star and the like), coal-grilled menu, and a flowjet pump system shared with Euston. The name referenced a 19th-century Bloomsbury habit: whippet racing followed by ale at a local brewery and a plate of coal-grilled meats.
Closed December 2020 — displaced by the £245m sale of the Holborn Links Estate rather than any failure of the pub itself. Signage came down the following May. A November 2024 tease of a four-times-larger 'Whippet 2.0' on High Holborn (29 beer lines, five casks, targeted April 2025) stalled. The lineage instead continues at The Whippet EC2, 78-80 Old Broad Street, opening May 2026.
Ghost Hunter mode reveals 500+ closed and demolished pubs on the PINtPOINT radar — each one a room that once poured pints on that exact street corner.
Closure and address verified against CAMRA’s pub database. Last-pour archive from the venue’s Untappd check-ins.
