The Story
The site at 5 William IV Street just off Charing Cross was originally a Davy's basement wine bar named "The Tappit Hen" — the vault's specific label, after the old Scottish three-quart wine measurement / vessel. Davy's closed the Tappit Hen by mid-2007 (a contemporaneous Qype/Yelp review still online lamented it). In 2008 the site reopened as Terroirs, a natural-wine French bistro that kept the atmospheric basement level. Per CAMRA (129549) Terroirs closed 15 December 2020 during the second COVID lockdown ("future uncertain"); the closure was announced permanent in June 2021.
