The Square Rigger, 2 Arthur Street, London — corner Charrington house in its final trading years before 1988 closure and demolition.
The Story
A 1960s Bass Charrington reconstruction on the corner of Arthur Street and King William Street, at the northern approach to London Bridge and Monument. Nautical to the point of theatre: decorated as an 18th-century sailing ship with rigging, stuffed seagulls, timber, canned sea sounds, a mast and sails running through the interior, and bars named for parts of the vessel. Documented in the 1991 East London & City Beer Guide. Closed 1987, permanently 1988, and demolished in the late 1980s as part of area redevelopments. The corner has since hosted The Sports Academy and Dizzy's Bar, and now trades as Be at One (Monument branch) at 24 King William Street in D.K.B House.
