The Story
178 Bishopsgate, E. Lacon & Co. Standing outside were two stuffed Peelers in their original uniforms; inside, a mural traced the evolution of the Force from the time of the Watchmen. The pub took its name from Sir Robert Peel who, as Home Secretary in 1822, founded Britain's Police Force — the officers immediately nicknamed 'Peelers'. The writer Alan Reeve-Jones visited and noted: 'The beer is good and the service is good. Be sure to visit this place before it is taken down and used in evidence.' Liverpool Street station. Now gone.
