Judge Tindal's, 5-6 Tindal Street, Chelmsford — the classic pub sign painting of Chief Justice Tindal in red robes, and the green-and-gold frontage in its Judge Tindal's trading era. The site is now a Specsavers.
The Story
Dating back to the 1700s as Judge Tindal's Tavern, situated appropriately on Tindal Street, this was a really popular city-centre Chelmsford pub in its heyday, though towards the end had fallen out of favour with local drinkers. Named after Sir Nicholas Conyngham Tindal, one of Chelmsford's most celebrated sons and Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. Lived a rich and varied life — in a previous incarnation as a café it entertained Jimi Hendrix ahead of his Corn Exchange appearance in 1967. In its final years underwent multiple rethinks and rebrands (an Irish bar for a while, then Liaison — a pour-your-own-pint bar). The site now trades as a Specsavers.
Ghost Hunter mode reveals 500+ closed and demolished pubs on the PINtPOINT radar — each one a room that once poured pints on that exact street corner.
