Originally licensed as the Crown in c.1775 it was renamed during the 1784 General Election by the landlord Sam House who was an ardent admirer of the Whig politician Charles James Fox. He offered free drinks to anyone voting for Fox and the Duchess of Devonshire also offered a kiss
