The Story
Opened in 1998 by author and veteran breaks DJ James Goodman, Fluid was a split-level, late-night cocktail bar, club and sushi restaurant in the heart of Clerkenwell. Japanese culture threaded through the design — futuristic graphics alongside retro tabletop arcade machines (Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Arkanoid), low-level spaces, sumptuous cocktails with an eastern twist. It programmed credible club nights, mid-week acoustic sessions, quizzes and film screenings — holding its own in one of London's most fiercely competitive bar strips. Steps from Farringdon station, at the point where Clerkenwell bleeds into the Barbican. The kind of place that felt genuinely new in 1998 and managed to stay that way.
