Corney & Barrow's down-market sister chain — Coates took the upmarket City wine bar formula and made it accessible. The London Wall branch opened in 1991, offering good value food in an upbeat atmosphere. Lunchtime pizza. In the evenings it got lively: karaoke on Wednesdays and Fridays, disco on Thursdays. As one of the researchers of the 1999 Evening Standard guide put it: 'Essex nymphos by night and an easy place to pull on Thursdays.'
