The Story
A Whitbread house at 185 and 187 Bishopsgate, in the directories from 1808, when William Waller kept it at what was then 136 Bishopsgate Street Without; the street was renumbered in 1915. Bob and Eve Acland took it on in 1967 and by 1970 it was the centre of London’s teddy-boy revival, photographed for the Sunday Times and written up in Rolling Stone, with a memorial service at St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate in January 1972 for a barmaid killed in a car accident on Whitehall. London Beer City told that story in October 2026. It was renamed the Pump in 1975 and the Handpump in 1982, and was demolished in 1987 for the Broadgate development. The pin marks today’s 185 Bishopsgate, so treat the exact spot as approximate.
Ghost Hunter mode reveals 500+ closed and demolished pubs on the PINtPOINT radar — each one a room that once poured pints on that exact street corner.
